Blog: 5 Best Practices to Save Energy With Your ATM Fleet

April 17, 2023  |  JEROME AMARA

Energy savings is a key issue for banks

The global trend to reduce energy consumption is driven by the urgent need to address climate change. Financial Institutions (FIs) face several challenges when it comes to reducing their energy consumption. They have complex operations and infrastructure which makes reducing their energy consumption while maintaining their operations at high-level quality a challenge. Security and reliability as well as the adoption of new technologies are often time-consuming and costly. These are additional challenges to overcome.

Some FIs have taken steps to reduce their own energy consumption and carbon footprint. They install energy management systems in their buildings, invest in renewable energy, or encourage their employees to adopt eco-friendly practices. Another area where energy-efficient policies can have an important impact is the self-service channel.

5 best practices to save energy with your ATM fleet

    1. Upgrade to energy-efficient ATMs: Banks can replace older, less efficient ATMs with newer ones that are designed to be more energy-efficient. For example, our latest technology in DN Series™ results in a power saving rate of at least 30%, and up 60%, compared to traditional ATMs. Our ATMs are equipped with energy-saving features such as low-power displays and LED panels.
    2. Implement power management software: Idle periods can be programmed to put the ATMs in sleep mode. During periods of low usage, such as during bank branch, mall or retail store closing times ATMs can be remotely turned off and back on when they can again be used. This significantly reduces energy consumption.
    3. Implement remote monitoring and maintenance: Banks can use remote monitoring and maintenance tools to monitor the energy usage of their ATMs and identify opportunities for energy savings. For example, it is technically possible to monitor the temperature and humidity of the ATM room to optimize cooling and heating systems.
    4. Reduce lighting with high energy consumption: Banks can switch to energy efficient lighting around their ATMs by using energy-efficient LED lights and motion sensors to turn off lights when no one is present.
    5. Use renewable energy sources: Banks can power their ATMs with renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, to reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainable energy use.

By implementing these measures, banks can significantly reduce the energy consumption associated with their ATMs. This reduces their cost of ownership and assures consumers that they are also contributed to limit their impact on the environment.
